How to Decorate Your Backyard for the Holidays

Entertaining for the holidays doesn’t need to be stressful, and with some pre-planning it can also be something you are able to do outdoors.

Let the professionals at Riverbend Sandler create the most luxurious backyard you and your family can enjoy for years to come. Our custom pool designs allow for the best possible space that features everything you need and want in order to entertain.

Once your gorgeous backyard is complete, you can make the most out of it this holiday season by considering Riverbend Sandler’s top party planning tips.

Pre-Plan Your Tablescape

Once you have an estimate for how many guests will be in attendance, it is time to start planning your outdoor table. Aside from making sure that you have the basics covered (i.e. that there is enough space at the table, that you have enough chairs, that you have enough kitchenware, and so on), this will also give you time to craft or buy anything you need to decorate the table, such as:

  • Centerpieces
  • Place cards
  • Table embellishments

This is a great opportunity to let your creative side free. There are so many fun ways to create a beautiful, inviting table for all to enjoy.

Go Under Cover

The weather may or may not cooperate when the day of celebration arrives, so it a good idea to create an outdoor room by providing a shaded and weather protected area outside.

For those looking for a flexible shading option, consider a shade canopy or another durable fabric. For those who are looking for a more permanent solution, you may be able to extend or angle your roof line, or integrate different hardscape structures such as a pergola with a closed roof. You can provide additional protection from the elements by adding operable shutters, roll-down shades or gauzy drapes.

Create Warmth

Nothing will draw friends and family outdoors faster than creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Incorporate an outdoor fireplace or hearth near where your outdoor dining table will be, and consider having a separate entertaining area with a fire pit and plush outdoor seating nearby to create a spot that promotes rest, relaxation and conversation.

Heat Food Thoroughly

The easiest way to ensure that the food stays at optimal temperatures while you entertain is to prepare, cook and serve meals in and around your outdoor kitchen. If you are preparing meals inside, use chafing dishes to help keep food warm.

  • Got turkey? When you remove the turkey from the oven, it will need some time to rest. Gently tent the turkey with aluminum foil and use this time to reheat vegetables and other side dishes. When everything is ready to go, carve the turkey tableside to ensure everyone gets a warm and juicy slice.

Plan Activities for the Kids

If children are going to be in attendance, make sure that you have a few activities planned to keep them entertained while the adults chat. Plan some fun activities in the pool like pool noodle relays and aquatic basketball. You can also plan scavenger hunts, create an outdoor theater (all you need is a projector and a white sheet or shower curtain) and fun holiday-related crafts.
